YEAR HAPPY NEW YEAR HAPPY NEW YEAR HAPPY NEW VF&P NAPPV PENLAND PLACE GALLERY There's a new Penland gallery in Charlotte under the guidence of Board member Dot Hodges. It features work of instructors, residents, former residents, visiting artists and studio coordinators. The gallery opened on December 7th at 211 North College Street, Suite 325, in a downtown development area known as CityFair. The store manager is Amy Shafer Swisher, who reports that initial sales have been good. More work and more artists are needed but they must meet the criteria in terms of their relationship to Penland. If you are interested, please contact the gallery directly by calling 704-334-6888. Artists who are currently participating include Stan Andersen, Cynthia Bringle, Edwina Bringle, Herb Cohen, Paige Davis, Rick Eckerd, Jon Ellenbogen & Rebecca Plummer, Shane Eero, Paula Garrett, Kathryn Gremley, Judson Guerard, Yoko Higuchi, Marvin Jensen, Bart Kasten, Jane Lefevre, Julie Leonard, Rob Levin, Harvey Littleton, Ron Probst, Beverly Plummer, Douglass Rankin & Will Ruggles, Sally Rogers, Ken Sedberry and Randy Shull. MOVING EARTH AT PENLAND Last winter we changed the Penland skyline with a new building; this winter we're changing Penland's earth line! If you attended the auction or worked as a volunteer and braved the mudflats, if you ever played volleyball after a hard rain or even if you just walked on the path in the midst of a summer storm, you'll be glad to know that the grading, surfacing and drainage system currently underway is designed to correct those problems. Part of the same project is preparing the site for the new wood kiln which will be built during the spring concentration. The old one is gone and the area around it has been cleared and graded. When it is all finished, the bank will have a gentler slope, the terraced area will be much broader, the path will follow a natural line from the Loom House to the Pines and the small retaining walls will be gone. There will be much more space for volley ball and tenting, but where in the world will we hide the Easter eggs?
